Dr Melanie Jewell
Counselling Psychologist (PsychD in Psychotherapeutic and Counselling Psychology)
EMDR Practitioner with Children, Adolescents and Adults
Certified Sensorimotor Psychotherapist
I have over 19 years’ experience of working therapeutically with adults, children and adolescents in a range of different settings. I have trained in a number of different therapeutic approaches so that I can work with clients in a way that best meets their own individual needs. My therapeutic work is supervised, in line with Professional Code of Conduct, and I am also trained to supervise other psychologists and psychotherapists.
I regularly take part in continued professional development such as seminars, training and courses to ensure that my knowledge and skills are up to date with latest psychological research and methods. I also assist in the teaching and training of others (within the NHS, doctoral psychology training and assisting on Sensorimotor Psychotherapy training).
Children and adolescents often have not made the decision to come to therapy themselves, so my approach involves building a therapeutic relationship that feels collaborative. I work with the young person to look at how their environments (home, school, local community) both help with and add to the difficulties they are experiencing. This often involves meeting with parents and teachers as part of the assessment and sometimes as part of the ongoing work.
I use a range of approaches such as art, sand play, the use of stories, CBT, EMDR and Sensorimotor Psychotherapy to help children and young people express themselves and work towards resolving their difficulties, alongside any work that needs to be done within their environments.
