What Is Craniosacral Therapy?
Craniosacral Therapy is an effective treatment that helps to (re-) balance the nervous system and supports your body’s natural ability to restore and heal itself.
With compassionate, gentle, hands-on holding, craniosacral therapy assists in releasing areas of tension so that your system can realign itself for optimum health. Treatment works with the whole body, but focuses on the spine, the skull and its cranial sutures, diaphragms, organs and the fascia. As the tension and restriction of nerve passages is eased with craniosacral therapy, the movement of cerebrospinal fluid through the body is optimised around the nervous system, restoring the body to its natural state of health.
Once the source of the problem has been determined, gentle hands-on holding restores the natural movement of the fluid, the related bones and soft tissues, which assist the body to self-correct. Every cell in the body is connected to the craniosacral system; its role is so vital that an imbalance or dysfunction in it can cause a range of physical and emotional problems.
What Conditions Can Craniosacral Therapy Help To Heal?
Trauma and mental health problems disrupt our body’s natural balance and health creating a self-perpetuating stress loop, which craniosacral therapy seeks to ease. People may come for craniosacral therapy because they have acute physical problems like headaches or bad backs, or long-standing problems both physical and emotional. Craniosacral therapy can help with physical tension, digestive problems, chronic pain, fertility issues, difficulty breathing, tinnitus, anxiety, difficulty sleeping, PTSD and complex trauma, compulsions or addictions, low energy, depression, fear such as chronic stress, trauma, depression, fear, anxiety and a sense of disconnection or numbing from the body. Sometimes people just have craniosacral therapy for ongoing support in their busy lives and for help to meet life’s challenges.
At the Oxford Development Centre at our Witney service, craniosacral therapy is combined with mindfulness training and yoga, which are very powerful in their combination and offer invaluable tools to clients; creating awareness, nourishing their resources, building resilience and thus empowering them towards recovery. The craniosacral work creates a safe space for people to explore the link between physical sensations, past events and emotions. Mindfulness and yoga highlight this awareness further. This combined approach offers safety and holding to explore issues, often traumatic, that lie behind people’s mental health problems. The sessions support and encourage clients in each step towards recovery, safety and ease.
What To Expect From A Craniosacral Therapy Session
Christina will place her hands lightly on you, whilst you are fully clothed. She will use her hands to listen to you, in much the same way as a psychotherapist might listen to your words. Your body will respond to this sensitive touch by beginning to listen to itself. You will be helped to develop a deeper understanding of the physical impact that your mental health problems have had and your change of awareness will support your recovery process. The sessions can provide a direct and safe experience of emotional and physical stress release. For many clients these sessions provide a perfect accompaniment to the specialist psychological therapies we use and can be tailored into their overall individual treatment plan. You can read more about how Craniosacral therapy can help with the healing journey through Christina’s excellent article featured in Fulcrum Magazine.
